Practice

Prayer as listening instead of producing.

My instinct is to research, model, and solve. This practice asks me to become quiet and leave room for an answer I did not manufacture.

Two-way prayer and journaling

What I actually do.

Six steps. Open any step for the full version.

  1. 01

    Clear the noise

Sit quietly until I stop producing the next thought.

    Full version

I sit quietly long enough to stop deliberately producing the next thought.

The goal is availability. I am trying to stop solving for a moment so something can reach me.

  2. 02

    Write freely

    Put down whatever comes, unedited.

    Full version

I write without trying to make it wise, Christian, coherent, or publishable.

I want the page to show me what is actually moving through me.

  3. 03

    Pray

Ask God to show me what I need to see.

    Full version

This is the turn from self-observation to relationship.

  4. 04

    Read it back

Reread slowly instead of writing more.

    Full version

The page becomes something I can listen through instead of something I am still controlling.

  5. 05

    Mark what draws me

Circle, underline, or box what carries weight.

    Full version

Every line does not need to matter equally. I mark whatever carries unusual weight.

  6. 06

    Carry it into life

Reduce it to what I am being asked to do.

    Full version

I reduce the marked material to what I believe I am being asked to understand, surrender, repair, practice, or do.

The point is a changed life, and a profound page is a side effect at best.

Discernment

What I hear on the page gets tested.

The practice makes hidden motives, fears, attachments, and convictions visible. Then they are tested.

Scripture gives direction

What I hear in prayer never outranks the character of Christ or the direction of Scripture.

Fruit gives feedback

A reading that makes me more proud, isolated, controlling, dishonest, or destructive has failed the test.

Obedience closes the loop

Insight that never changes the next choice has become observation without formation.

Why the page is never the authority

The practice matters because it makes hidden motives, fears, attachments, convictions, and questions visible.

Once they are visible they can be brought under Scripture, prayer, and the test of what kind of fruit they produce.

Receive, discern, surrender, obey. Then watch what kind of person those choices are forming.
